One thing we should always be aware of is our health, and we should never take it for granted. No matter what we may believe about life, whether in a religious sense or a moral sense, whether in a philosophical sense or a metaphysical or spiritual one, we can all agree that our body is a gift. We don’t know exactly why we have it. Are we our bodies, or are we the owners of our bodies? Are our bodies even a part of who we truly are? What differences does it make? Aren’t they real enough to us right now, as we speak? They’re the only way we can communicate, our only way to sustain ourselves and to navigate this world we live in. Then again, what are we sustaining? Our true self or just our body? Yes, yes, I understand all of that, our body is merely a vessel for the spirit within us. Our body seems to be a separate entity from us, one we are merely temporarily trapped in, one we have no choice but to coexist with. Our body is our main source of physical pain, since it’s basically our only source of it. We hate that we can be hurt, we tremble at the realization of just how frail we truly are, at just how little we understand such an important part of ourselves as is our body. It’s strange, isn’t it? Our body is always there for us, like a friend that is with us from birth? We don’t even know how it does most of what it does, and if we do it’s only after years and years of scientific study. How does our body heal itself? How does our body properly distribute all the food that we eat? How does it know when to wake us up out of our sleep? It reminds me of an Alan Watts audio from his ‘Out of Your Mind’ audio collection, which I really enjoy, where he asks us to imagine if we had to turn ourselves on, part by part, upon waking up. How exactly would we do it? We would have to remember how to turn ourselves on in order to start our day. What if we were to forget? What then? Would we be doomed to sleep forever? Maybe someone else could wake us up, who knows. What I’m saying is, we don’t know how the blood flows in our veins, we don’t know where our next thought is coming from, we don’t know how exactly we digest the food we eat; we don’t know just how our body decides what it needs and what is meant to become waste. I mean, I’m sure science knows, but again, it’s because of academic study, which means it was already going on way before we knew. Our body is always keeping itself alive, rejuvenating itself as best as it can, healing itself and moving forward, and for what? So that we can have this experience here and now, so that we can continue living this strange life. It’s all very strange indeed, but just because I don’t understand it doesn’t mean I don’t see the value in it. Personally, I hope my body continues to heal itself for as long as it can, and that I can spend a long time on earth with my wife Maria, so I hope the same will be true for us both. I have no clue why I’m here, but I feel like I don’t really have to know, because there’s something that wants me to be here now, and that’s why I’m here in the first place. What I’m trying to say is, cherish your health, cherish your time on this earth. It’s the most important thing you have, at least for now.
