I think it would do us all a lot of good to embrace the uncertainty of life, to have an open and inviting attitude towards change, even when we know if could be uncomfortable or even totally dreadful. Now, I don’t speak as an authority on this at all. I love my life, and the people in it. I can imagine a number of things that would completely devastate me if they were to affect someone close to me, and yet people go through these types of things every day. So, although I’m no kind of authority at all in this matter, I’m still writing about it because I’m able to recognize what a huge change this would make in my life if I were to truly implement it. The fact is, there’s no sense in worrying about what we can’t change. All we can do is continue living the best way we know how, and hope for the best. If we all stopped worrying so much about how things will go, we might find that we actually have a lot more time on our hands to enjoy our lives, to truly enjoy the moments that should really give meaning to our existence. See, if we create a mental habit of constantly seeking, of always needing to achieve the next thing, the next achievement or goal, in order to feel complete, then when will it ever be time for us to enjoy? When will we finally be free to enjoy everything that we have accomplished? Will we even be capable of enjoying it at that point? The mind runs on habits, and after years of constantly chasing, it might not be satisfied with much else anymore. Perhaps we’ll find that, by the time we have accomplished so much, we no longer know why we even wanted to achieve it in the first place. We can’t sit down and enjoy our stuff, because it’s never enough. Personally, I can’t say I’ve ever been at such a level of material wealth, but I can definitely see the appeal of material possessions and how they can make us feel like we’re living in the right way just because we’re acquiring or accumulating them. Ram Dass’ account of the success he experienced in his career before psychedelics and his eventual spiritual journey in India comes to mind when I think of this idea. He was so sure of what he wanted, and when he got there, he realized it just wasn’t fulfilling. Could he have had any way of knowing just what was coming his way, in the form a psychedelic mushroom trip, through Timothy Leary? Could he have imagined what it would lead him to? That he would be living a completely different life very soon, in a faraway land, immersed in a foreign culture? Things happen, and we don’t know why. As much as we feel like we have to plan our lives, we also have the see the genius in the random, the randomness that really makes this world go round. Again, I think a lot of good can come from us all embracing it, and appreciating it a lot more.
