500 WORDS, DAY 69: My Channel for Music Production Tutorials

My new studio setup. Editing the first tutorial video for my upcoming YouTube channel.

Today I figured I’d just write down a bit about what’s currently happening with my creative pursuits; what I’m learning about and what I’ve been working on recently, etc. In the last few months, I’ve been learning as much as I can about everything related to music production, mixing and mastering, and even video editing also, especially because I’m planning to finally get my YouTube channel started, for music production tutorials for both software and hardware. Now that I got a new studio desk, I can actually clamp my microphone boom arm properly, as well as my phone holder so I can film what I’m doing from an overhead angle that won’t shake when I hit the pads or whatever. This was one of the biggest reasons I hadn’t started working on my videos yet, despite wanting to for a while. I just didn’t know what I could do for a good overhead angle, and it’s definitely necessary with what I’m wanting to do, since I’m dealing with a lot of small screens, like the MPC or even the Elektron boxes, and I want to be able to properly show what I’m doing while I’m explaining it. Now that I have the desk, the mic arm, the phone holder, and everything all set up, I had this realization that I just have to get started. I absolutely needed to get started with it now, otherwise I would just be making an excuse, and I knew it. With the way the new studio setup ended up, I just knew I couldn’t keep on making excuses. I did think about waiting a bit so I could buy an actual professional camera, but I realized that would just end up being a huge detour for now, into the world of filming, lighting, and all sorts of things that are completely foreign to me. It’s not that I wouldn’t enjoy learning it, because I’m sure I would, like I have most things I’ve learned so far when it comes to audio or video gear. It’s just that, again, I would really like to get started right away, and the phone camera is actually not bad at all, at least when used in the right kind of lighting. So, my first tutorial video is finally in the works, and I’m proud to say I’m really happy with how it’s turning out. I can’t believe just how much work video editing really is, but in some ways, it is a lot like editing music, so it’s not too bad. Apart from tutorial videos on all kinds of hardware and software, I’m planning on uploading beat-making and jam sessions, where I go over my process for creating a beat from start to finish, and finally performing a jam at the end with the different elements I just created. As you can probably tell, I’m really excited about this new venture. I mean, I’ve always been excited about my creative pursuits, but for some reason this feels different than being an “artist” in the sense of trying to become famous or make money from selling music or from streaming. It actually seems more realistic, as well as a lot more productive, since I’d actually be a kind of teacher, just teaching people like myself who want to make music and learn about the tools that will allow them to do so, from the comfort of my own home. Anyway, wish me the best with this newest endeavor of mine, please. I appreciate you!

If you have a minute, please check out my song ‘Couldn’t Live Without My Baby,’ which I wrote and recorded for my amazing wife Maria.
