Sometimes I don’t know what to write about, not because I have nothing on my mind, but because I know that, in this life, everything is ultimately relative, and my thoughts on anything could change at any time. I mean, that has to be the right way to live, because otherwise you just close yourself off from so many possibilities. How do you know you’re cutting off the right aspects of yourself, or if you’re headed in the right direction in your life? That’s the reason why sometimes I only really feel comfortable writing about basic things like peace and how everybody deserves love or at least respect from everyone else. The way I see it, kindness and decency are the only things that we can all tell are necessary. I believe that everyone, even the cruelest of people, have some inherent good within us. The fact that so many of us become corrupted, often times through no fault of our own, and end up hurting and corrupting others, is another story. That is part of life, whether it’s because of the way life itself is designed, or whether it’s because of the society we’ve created on this planet and the values we’ve collectively decided to uphold and encourage. The fact is that life offers us many opportunities to become corrupted, but if we go through life blaming everything external for our circumstances you can be sure that we won’t end up anywhere positive, neither internally nor externally. Anyway, keeping an open mind to life’s possibilities, to different ideas than we’ve grown to believe, is something I believe to be essential to an individual’s progress. The problem is that nowadays I see so many people promoting their view of things, or their side of some story, completely convinced of what they’re saying beyond any shadow of doubt. I ask myself ‘how can this be?’ How can people, some very young, be so sure of so many things, and have such strong opinions about them? About political parties, laws, how other people should or shouldn’t live their lives, what they believe is the truth about life or whatever comes after it. I realize that so many people are so uncomfortable with the reality that is the uncertainty of life, that they cling to any idea that can bring them some sense of peace. When people feel like they’ve found the right religion or philosophy of life, and that everyone else absolutely must follow it as well, or like the political party they’re going to vote for is going to change everything that’s wrong in the world and fix everyone’s problems, it becomes clear that they’ve attached their identity to the ideals or identity of this group or ideology. The danger that comes along with this is that people who don’t share these ideas are no longer seen as individuals with their own ideas that we can try to understand and maybe relate with, but rather as people we must convince about our own idea, because otherwise we would have to see them as enemies. People are labeled and described only in terms of their perceived group or ideology, and this ultimately makes mutual understanding between the world’s general population a lot more difficult.
