Less is more. I mean, it’s not always the case, but it certainly applies to a vast number of situations, and it’s a wise saying that I think more people should take time to consider. The problem is that the fact that less is often more isn’t always obvious to us, since we’ve grown up in a society that places so much value on money and material possessions, so we’ve effectively been conditioned to think of more as equal to, and synonymous with, better. More money is better than less money, after all, and that seems to be our model for everything else. Personally, I don’t enjoy letting things go, even material possessions, and I always feel like I might need end up needing something later on if I decide to get rid of it now. Anyway, let’s look at food, and how less could be more. Food is essential to our survival, so it makes sense that we all seek it out, since we all require an adequate amount of it in order to keep on living and performing our basic functions on this planet. How much food is too much though? How can we know, exactly? When it comes to food, I’ve recently had to start learning this exact lesson, that less is indeed more. In what way is less more? Well, there’s a lot of research being done these days that shows that eating less is actually healthier for us than eating more. It seems our bodies aren’t meant to handle incoming food at all times, but rather only at certain times of the day, or in a certain rhythm that has to do with our metabolism and things of that nature. When we’re really hungry and we look at food it usually looks so delicious that it’s tempting to take a lot, but as we start getting full, we often realize we have more food on our plate than we actually need. Personally, I don’t like wasting food, so even though I know the food is too much, I just end up forcing myself to eat it, even if it takes me a while. Now, this is not a weight thing for me, although I’m sure there are millions of people who would live healthier lives if they decided to eat less, exactly because of issues with their weight. For me, the issue has come in the form of acid reflux. It’s so weird to me adjusting to this new way of life, of “less is more,” since I’ve basically eaten everything throughout my life and I’ve never had any issues with any kind of food, neither any allergies or anything of that kind. So, it really bums me out to have to cut out a lot of food and drinks, but I’m willing to do it, especially since I’d rather stop eating and drinking a million things than to give up drinking coffee, even if I can only drink one cup a day now. Anyway, there’s been a lot less variety to my diet lately, and also less food intake in general, and I feel like it’s helping me get better, if only a little bit. I’m going to give it time and see how this thing progresses. Who knows, maybe at some point in the future I can get somewhat back to normal, but I’m pretty sure that the lesson I’ve learned from this whole thing, that of “less is more” will stick with me for quite a long time, and will alter my eating habits forever, since I don’t want to end up in the same situation, if I somehow manage to get out of it in the first place.
