500 WORDS, DAY 120: The Importance of Balance

Balance is really one of the most important things we can learn and practice in this life, if not the most important thing, since it applies to absolutely everything. Everything, and I really do mean absolutely everything, has to be balanced. Not everything is, but everything should be, in order for some degree of order to be maintained. We eat until we are full, but what would happen if we were to continue eating? Where would the limit be? I don’t know exactly what would happen, or when it would start happening, but I know it wouldn’t be good in the slightest. Isn’t food good for us though? Of course, but it has to be consumed in moderation. Another thing that’s interesting to me is that, although none of us eat garbage on purpose, some of the food we eat is ultimately discarded by our bodies as waste. Everything has some good and bad within it, and there’s no way around that, meaning that we must take the good with the bad. For example, we all know that every day people die from car accidents, both drivers and pedestrians. Does this mean that cars should be outlawed? No, of course not. They are valuable tools we use for transportation, and our lifestyles would be severely limited without them. So, although cars do pose a kind of risk to people, we allow them, and we must live in a world where they also exist. We would be paralyzed if we decided to avoid every single activity that could pose some sort of potential risk to us. So, the fact is that life itself is definitely dangerous. There is external danger, and there is internal danger from our own bodies and minds. So, although we do have to remain vigilant and always be prudent and careful, being too careful can turn us into extremely neurotic individuals who can barely get by without suffering constant anxiety or panic attacks. What if we decide to completely ignore all the possible risks though, and to do everything that comes to our minds without giving much thought to the possible consequences? We are sure to get into situations that will lead to our detriment, and very quickly. It isn’t hard to get oneself involved in a horrible situation in this world. Trouble is definitely out there for whoever is actively looking for it. So, we can see that both ways of being can lead to serious problems, from an inability to be comfortable in one’s own body and mind, to feeling so free and ready for whatever that we get into situations that could lead to all kinds of trouble, even death. What is the answer here? Balance, of course. I’m sure I could come up with a million more examples of this, and so could you, or anyone else. Why do I mention this? To illustrate that what I’m saying is not deep in the slightest, and it’s something that’s actually very basic, and should be clear to all who are observant of life and looking to learn from it. All I’m doing here is trying to reminding you, and myself, of it, since it seems to me like, often times, the things that are out in the open and extremely clear, are the easiest for people to take for granted and forget. Anyway, remember: balance!
