Communication is so important. Whether we’re talking about friendships, family, romantic relationships, co-workers, or collaborators of any kind, everyone could benefit from having better communication, and therefore understanding, between each other. Even entire communities, nations, and groups of all kinds would benefit greatly from better communication with other groups in their communities. There are so many different peoples and cultures, with so many different histories and languages, and even though we have come quite a long way when it comes to mutual understanding and respect, I for one believe we still have an even longer way to go, and I know I’m not alone in this opinion. Since we are all so different, and as I mentioned, our backgrounds and histories are so unique, it can be hard to always come to a mutual agreement about how things should work in this world we have to share. Coming to some sort of agreement on major issues is extremely important, because even though some areas of the world may certainly be populated by mostly specific races and cultures, the fact is that we live in a completely multicultural world these days. People move all around, and all kinds of different cultures intertwine on a daily basis. With so many different languages, there are already barriers in communication between people from different places. Also, depending on which area of a certain country you’re from, you might even speak differently from others who are in a different area. Life is so diverse, and it is so naïve of us to think that we can expand the world in the way in which we are constantly doing, with the internet, with capitalism and the free market, with constant tourism and immigration, without also expanding and improving our abilities for communicating with each other, for understanding each other’s ideas and points of view. Of course, we don’t always have to agree with each other on every topic, but we should be able to come to some sort of agreement on how to handle disagreements without hatred and violence. After all, we are all supposed to be different, since a world where everyone is exactly the same could hardly be called a world at all. Religious people love to say that we are wiser than animals, that perhaps we even have a spirit or a soul, when they in fact, don’t. We are higher beings than the animals, and historically, whenever people tried to put down others, they would compare them to animals. Well, if we consider ourselves as more intelligent beings than animals, then why not ask ourselves why that is, or why it’s supposed to be this way? I don’t know if animals don’t have souls or spirits. I mean, it seems to me like they do, but at the same time, anyone can tell that animals think differently from us, and that their thought processes are probably not as complex as ours. Either way, they have their own means of communication, but seeing as how much more social we are as human beings, and how far we have come, to the point of developing verbal languages with millions of words, even slang words, always aiming to get out points across more and more effectively, it makes sense to me that we should come up with some universal guidelines for communication, so that we can always respect and learn from each other, and by this, elevate each other, and humanity as a whole, to higher and higher levels of living and being.
