500 WORDS, DAY 135: Positivity & Compassion

Strive at all times to become a completely positive person. Life is unpredictable so, as far as I’m concerned, we can never really outsmart it. We can’t hope for an easy life, because we could get it, but we could also get the total opposite. The only way we can be sure that we have what it takes to make it through this life is to know that we’ve built ourselves up to be someone who doesn’t run in fear of life’s challenges, or who chooses to ignore all of life’s possibilities because they are confusing and overwhelming. A cynical mind is one that has been corrupted, a mind that can no longer expect any kind of positivity from life, and is therefore wide open for depression to strike. If we want to live worthwhile lives, we have to strive to be at peace with life, as well as with ourselves and others, and to be as helpful as we can, and compassionate with everyone we meet. We have to learn to see others as extensions of ourselves, and ourselves as extensions of them. None of us are an island, and the fact of life is that we are all living our lives within an extremely complex and interconnected web, and the connections are much deeper than we can ever perceive. Life is very strange in this way, but also very interesting because of it. Being interesting means it must be unpredictable, as we all know, and we never know when we will find ourselves in desperate need of help from another person. None of us would like to be in a situation where our well-being or our very life is in the hands of another person, but we can’t deny that many people have found themselves in the very same position throughout history, and we actually find ourselves in these kinds of positions more often than we would think. When we have some sort of surgery we are putting our lives quite literally in the surgeon’s hands, when we buy a prescription, we are trusting the knowledge of whoever prescribed it to us. When we get on the bus, we are trusting the driver won’t crash and kill us all. We absolutely must learn to expect the unexpected, and yet to remain hopeful and brave, because life really is crazier than we could ever imagine. We have to realize that life is a rare treasure, to be alive and to be here now, to be able to feel and to think and to process this whole thing. We have to see that, although life can definitely be scary, it is ultimately worth living, and it is worth fighting for, or through. We have to learn to see this truth at every moment, so we don’t take life for granted. When we take the small joys of life for granted, we start to wonder what is the point of it all, and this is dangerous thinking. Many of us only feel grateful about our lives when someone else’s misfortune is brought to our attention. We feel a sense of happiness because of the fact that it is someone else who is suffering, rather than ourselves. This shouldn’t be the case. We shouldn’t need to witness someone else’s misfortune in order for us to remember to be grateful. Now, when we finally start seeing life as the ever-present treasure that it is, and we start seeing others through the perspective of the spirit, of oneness behind all forms, it can be hard to keep ignoring so much pain and suffering that’s going on around the world, even when it isn’t happening to us. So, how can we keep our sanity in this case? I’m not entirely sure… We’ll go into it more tomorrow though.

I appreciate you reading.
