As an extension of the light which pervades all consciousness, it seems to me like what we call the human spirit is nothing but the very force that give us life, the reason we continue to wake up every morning and strive to remain alive. It seems to me like something as sacred as the source of life itself, of all our lives and of the world we inhabit, should come from none other than the creator of everything, or God, in other words the divine authority which we cannot begin to label or understand, and which has the qualities of purity and holiness, and of everything we recognize as natural and good in ourselves as human beings. In Hindu philosophy there is the idea of the Atman, the individual reflection of Brahman, which is the universal Spirit or source of all that is. The two are in fact one, in much the same way as when Jesus spoke about God dwelling in our hearts. So, if we have the highest goodness within us how can it be that we live in such a messed-up world? My idea is that too often we ignore our intuition, and we forget to trust or even listen to our spirit, to what we should know is right. Maybe our perspective has been skewed and we can’t see things clearly anymore. Society is constantly at work to indoctrinate us and fill us up with ideologies and labels, to belittle us and minimize us in all kinds of sneaky ways in order to fit us into little boxes or to sell us products, and many of us have succumbed to this and become so identified with certain groups and identities, willing to fight to the death for these ideas and groups, putting that over the lives and ideas of our fellow human beings. We have become completely blinded to the fact that, despite all these names, labels and movements we associate ourselves with to differentiate ourselves from others, we are all essentially composed of the same creative energy, the same extension of God’s light, and beyond any meaning or purpose to life, we should all understand that we are here to be good to each other, to respect and encourage each other. This is why it is believed that when we reach deep levels of meditation we can eventually step beyond the mental patterns and ideas we have become so submerged in, and we can experience a deep sense of equality or oneness with all that exists, of peace with life and the moment and all that is, because we are going past our individual identification with our thoughts and personalities, and merging with a peaceful unity of what might be called nothingness, but is really the canvas behind everything that happens in our minds, and therefore our entire realities. We are all a manifestation of the universe, a manifestation of God’s creative energy shining on the canvas of creation. Everything is in constant motion, vibrating and becoming at each second something different than it was before. This is due to the fact that Divine energy cannot be stopped. This divine energy is referred to as prana in the Hindu tradition, or divine light in the Kabbalah, which is the energy emanated through various levels of reality, symbolized as the ten sefirot of the tree of life, creating different dimensions or worlds, each operating at a different energy level.
