This is my fifth day of posting 500 words on my blog. So far, for the first four days I’ve followed a single train of thought. Today I’m taking a break from philosophizing to write about my newest musical release, ‘back to the beats vol. 3’
This is the third edition of my ‘back to the beats’ series, the medium I’ve finally chosen to get all of my rap beats out, meaning beats of mine that have a rap track structure, usually consisting of an intro, a couple verses and hooks, and an outro section. I have way too many dope beats just sitting on my hard drive since I don’t really rap as often as I produce, beats dating all the way back to 2011 when I was only 17, and listening back on them it just felt like a shame to keep them all only for myself to listen to.
So, in February of this year I collected 15 beats together, from back in 2011, and released them on ‘back to the beats’ volume 1. Fifteen more 2011 beats made up volume 2 which I released in April, and this third volume is still fully made up of 2011 beats. I was really into beat-making back in those early days, with nothing but FL Studio 11 and a regular old mouse and keyboard, getting faded and playing with random sounds, putting in each sample and each note in its exact position on the sequencer or the piano roll, building up multiple patterns and piecing them together, then mastering the end product myself and finally closing my eyes and sitting back to hear it. It’s a process I cherish to this day, so it’s cool to stop and think back on when I first started doing it, when I heard some of my first completed beats back in the day and knew that I really liked what I was hearing. Those were magical moments, so I’m glad to finally share some of those beats with the world.
These old beats may not be the most impressive, technically or sonically, but they do remind me of my roots and how far I’ve come in music production. These beats paint all kinds of mental pictures for me, and they explore really different moods, from the laid-back stoner intro ‘wake n bake,’ to hard and menacing trap beats like ‘drive to devour’, to classic and grimey boom bap beats like ‘cross the line’ or ‘from the jump’. The fourth volume will probably include a couple more 2011 beats, but it’ll mostly be made up of beats from 2012. We’re moving ahead on our journey through years of beat-making. Either way, each volume is made up of beats I love, and most of them I fondly remember making even though it was more than a decade ago and I was most likely baked as hell. I appreciate you for listening and I hope y’all enjoy this project as much as I do.
If you do enjoy it, I would really appreciate it if you follow me, either on Spotify or on Bandcamp. If you want to stream my music it is all available on Spotify, and if you wanna show some extra support and buy any of my albums you can get them on Bandcamp. Every person listening to my music means the world to me, since in the end, that is the real payoff for making music; having other people feel your music and vibe to it is worth much more than whatever financial gain you can make from it. Anyway, much love y’all, stay blessed and thanks for reading and/or listening!
