500 WORDS, DAY 39: Hidden In Plain Sight

I’ve been writing about time and about life and death in general, as well as what I think are some of the most important ideas associated with these topics, mainly topics that come up whenever we as humans contemplate life and death. I’ve also been writing a lot about creativity and art, about what it means to be an artist in today’s modern, materialistic world. Now I feel like it’s time to connect the dots a little more and to draw the link between these two different ideas I’ve been discussing. They say that art imitates life, and in a way, it’s really something as true as it is inevitable, ingrained into the very meaning of art itself, in my opinion. Art is what life truly is, what we experience or create whenever we do have some time to ourselves, when we find ourselves free to spend our time in peaceful solitude or in the company of people who we cherish and love, people who do us good and who we therefore enjoy spending our time with. Like I’ve been saying, our time on this earth is valuable, infinitely more valuable than any material wealth; our lives are valuable beyond any purpose or meaning we might want to give them ourselves even, they are valuable simply because we are conscious; in other words, for the sake of consciousness itself, which is really all that we know, although we don’t know why.

Life itself is art. I love walking places just to see the trees, especially on really sunny days when the leaves of the trees shine various bright shades of yellow, or seeing the reflection of the sunshine on the water. The mountains in the distance, the trippy patterns on all the different kinds of animals that exist, the light blue sky and the white clouds that glide across it, blessing us with rain, which we need to survive. The way everything works together, how we come together to form life, how the seasons change, everything is very artistic and is enough to fascinate anyone. That we have become desensitized to it and distracted from it is another story, but the beauty of life is there, hidden in plain sight, so to speak, just waiting for us to notice it and to properly appreciate it, not for its own sake, but for our own well-being. It is truly art in its purest form. How can human beings help but be artists then? Everyone is an artist, which is why, from the beginning of lives, most kids draw and doodle, or they sing along to the songs they hear on TV, or they bang on the kitchen pans, or whatever else, but I really think it’s within us all to create art in one way or another. In fact, I would say that absolutely everyone’s an artist, because every waking moment is art as well. There are probably billions of brilliant thoughts that cross all kinds of peoples’ minds each day, that we don’t hear about simply because they don’t leave the minds of the people who think them, so many interesting and potentially world-changing ideas. There is love, there is friendship, there is overcoming obstacles, it’s all art. There are so many talented writers or musicians or poets everywhere in the world, artists of all kinds, that are mostly unknown, but that doesn’t mean they are not artists. One thing is to be a famous artist, another is to simply be an artist, and all it takes for the latter to be the case, is to create any form of art.

Yesterday I was mentioning people who would say that spending one’s time on anything other than accumulating money is a waste of time, as well as of energy and life itself. These are the type of people who would classify a person as an artist based on whether or not they make a living from their art. The thing that makes one an artist, in these people’s eyes, would be that the art is commercially successful or well-known, but also, mostly important of all, that it generates wealth. It’s like when people say an album was “album of the year” and then go on to mention how many units it sold. One thing really doesn’t have much to do with the other, but in today’s world so many people are blinded by the illusion that is money.
