500 WORDS, DAY 54: Influence Pt. 2

Yesterday I introduced the idea of changing up the method by which I get these daily posts done. The change I’m referring to is that now, instead of randomly writing about whatever comes to mind, in a sort of stream-of-consciousness manner, I will instead choose one specific topic to write about, and I will go from there. I mentioned that if I don’t finish the topic that same day, which is very likely since each post is only five hundred words minimum, then I will continue it the next day, and for as many days as might be necessary. Hopefully no one topic gets too long, since the idea is for me to exercise my writing about various topics, some of which I might be more interested in, or more knowledgeable about, than others. It’s also supposed to add variety to this daily writing journey I’ve embarked on, and I’m confident that will be the case. Anyway, let’s get started with today’s topic. Today we’re actually continuing yesterday’s topic of ‘influence.’ The reason for continuing with this topic is that I feel like I have a lot more to say about what we all know as influence. Influence can be good or bad, and I mentioned yesterday how everything we think, say, or do is influencing others, whether we know it or not, or whether they themselves know it or not. Similarly, everything we experience in our day-to-day lives, and perhaps even things that we barely experience, such as things we perceive while we’re asleep, all influence us and have some role to play in shaping us to become who we are.

Now, before I go a lot further into what influence is or is not, as philosophical concept as well as a practical reality in our world, I feel like I should just write a bit about myself, more specifically about what influences me, or what has influenced me in the past. Maybe this will provide a clearer picture of where I’m coming from, not meaning what angle or position I’m coming from, but just literally what I’ve been through during my time on this earth, which includes everything that has combined into the being that is me. That’s what I mean by where I’m coming from, everything that has influenced me up to this point in my life. Now, although every single thing we experience has some influence on us, there are some things that have much greater influences than others, influences we are fully aware of. Music has always been a huge influence to me, as well as literature. When I was really young, like seven or eight, I wrote some short poems, and although I don’t remember actually trying to sing or rap them back then, I still have those poems today, and the lines of the poems rhyme, so I’m sure there was some rhythmic or melodic element to what I was doing. Whenever we had a writing assignment in class, like writing a short story or something like that, I would get creative and end up getting an A+. This wasn’t anywhere near the case for most of my other classes so it felt nice to be acknowledged for something I was seemingly quite good at. I had a Word Document I was writing this continuous adventure story on, on the family computer, and I was always adding to it or making changes to the story in some way. I’m not sure what made me want to write really, but when I started reading classic a few years later, I felt even more inspired to write than I ever had before. I tried to check on that story again after a good while had passed, to see if I could improve on it, but mostly just because I was curious. It’s a shame that my dad had already gotten rid of that computer by then, and didn’t think to copy the hard drive contents onto anything else.

Check out my song ‘It Is What It Is.’ I appreciate you!
