500 WORDS, DAY 76: Happiness

I always thought happiness was something that could be complicated, but which didn’t necessarily need to be. These days however, I’m starting to think that the uncertainty and what some might call overall absurdity of life, perhaps do create a world in which happiness unfortunately does have to be complicated. Maybe that’s the way it naturally is though; or maybe not, maybe it comes with living in a society and civilization created by, and made up of, billions of unique individuals, all with different perspectives and ideals, different motivations for living, and different dreams they might be working towards. Life is a beautiful, strange, twisted, tangled mess, and it’s really full of contradictions, as we are all aware of. Well, the exact same thing goes for us as human beings. We are all full of contradictions, and these contradictions are, in fact, what make us true humans, because they allow us to feel, to desire, to think and to appreciate, they allow us to create a story that motivates and drives us, and how we feel about our own lives depends greatly on a lot of factors even we might not be aware of at any given moment. We might feel happy by overcoming one big obstacle, even if we are going through a challenging chapter of our lives. In contrast, we can sometimes feel okay for years but, but then again, no more and no less than that, only okay. A lot of us can feel like we are only surviving, and barely even that, just floating along and taking up space. It would be amazing if life was as simple as being good to others and being happy being ourselves and doing what we love, but we all know that, for some reason, that is so, so far from how it ever seems possible for things to be. There are too many complications in the way of such a vision, even when we all supposedly want the same thing, or something very similar. I mean, we all protest on behalf of the poor, on behalf of the children, of those who’ve been abused and victimized, of victims of hate and discrimination. We all care so much about advancing equality and ending injustice and corruption, but for some reason we can’t ever make the dream come true. Even if we look at history, there have been so many examples of revolutionary takeovers and all kinds of such events, that symbolizes the supposed beginning of change. Well, I shouldn’t say supposed because change does come, but the corruption continues. So many who come up by fighting to overthrow dictators and the like, end up being dictators or tyrants themselves for some reason. Maybe it’s truly the human heart which has so much potential for evil, especially when money and especially power come in to play. I mention them as separate things, but we all know that money is power in today’s world. We’re all familiar with the famous saying ‘Money can’t buy happiness.’ At least it acknowledges that it’s ultimately impossible, but the fact that money could even be mentioned as possibly being able to buy happiness points to something we’re all obviously aware of, which is money’s connection to power. So, there we have the holy trinity of worldly treasure: money, power, happiness.
