500 WORDS, DAY 127: Choose Your Thoughts

Stay vigilant, and be aware of complications that could arise, but don’t dwell on possible disaster. Life is full of danger, but it is also full of beauty and amazing experiences. So much of our lives, and whether we feel comfortable and happy with them, comes down to how we perceive life, with how we perceive people as well as the world we live in. Thoughts are inevitable. We all think, whether we like it or not, it is part of our experience, at least in this material world. Do we choose our thoughts though? Some would say we do, but I think that ultimately, we don’t. Sure, our thoughts have to do with things we are actively engaged or interested in, which means they are not completely random. However, why did we become interested in them in the first place? Why and how did we decide to learn about the things we know? Do we decide to have anxious or depressive or suicidal thoughts? No, of course not. If it was up to us, we would never have these sorts of thoughts. We would have happy thoughts all the time. So, it seems obvious to me that thoughts are not in our control at all, and that they should also be viewed much like experiences and events we encounter during our daily lives. We often make the mistake of identifying ourselves with our thoughts, when we should be viewing our thoughts from a higher level and deciding whether we want to engage with them or not. Thoughts take on a life of their own if we pay attention to them, and the more attention we pay them the more they take hold of our minds. Now, if having a good or bad life has a lot to do with the way we perceive life itself, then I think it would be wise for us to try to control our thoughts, and to have as many positive thoughts as possible. Now, of I am not saying we have to become delusional and ignore the reality of our lives if they are not good, or of the world if we don’t like what we see. All I’m saying is that, ultimately, duality it is the nature of this life and of this world. Just as there is evil, and there is indeed a lot of it, there is also a lot of good. It often goes unnoticed, especially in these days of media and entertainment, because it often doesn’t generate as much attention as problems. I mean, it’s not really fun to gossip about all the good things going on, I guess, about parents taking care of their kids, about strangers helping each other for no reason, about all of the love that exists between people, of every time someone learns a lesson and improves his or herself, or surpasses an obstacle they once considered impossible. What I’m saying is, don’t focus on everything that could go wrong. Instead, focus on everything that is right. Trust me, if don’t see absolutely anything right, anything good, then you’re not looking hard enough, and that means there might be something blocking your view. I don’t mean that in a sarcastic tone either, I mean it because I feel it in myself. It’s hard sometimes to stay positive, especially seeing so much death and destruction happening around the world, to everyone including innocent children. However, there is nothing to be gained from anger and hatred, except more misunderstanding and more hatred and suffering, not to even mention violence. We have to always remind ourselves that there is good in this life, and we have to seek it out. Living in this way will allow us to be more fulfilled with our own lives, as well as to share our excitement for life with all those we come across, who may be feeling lost and in need of some inspiration.
