We all like to act as if we know what is real, as if we can possibly grasp the magnitude and wonder of life and everything it could possibly be or mean. We laugh at supernatural claims and spiritual beliefs. We are all very sophisticated in our own minds, whether we would like to recognize it or not. After all, we weren’t born a hundred years ago, right? We were born in the era of the internet, of social media, of unlimited available information, of individuality and specialization. We are living in time of science and technological advances, are we not? Why hold ourselves back with thoughts of spirituality, or even philosophy? Religion? Forget that! Now, don’t get me wrong. I, myself, am a constant critic of organized religion, and of holding religious beliefs without truly understanding or even trying to understand why, but simply following tradition or blind belief, closing ourselves off to others’ beliefs and ideas. However, I believe that, for a lot of people today, atheism has become just as much of a religion. These people are simply convinced that God cannot exist, that God does not exist. Perhaps they believe there is no spiritual reality, and there is nothing after death. Now, it’s fine if you believe this. I’m not saying you have to believe the opposite, because even I am not a hundred percent sure that I do. However, what I am saying is that, as soon as you decided to hold the belief that God does not exist, you are basically creating your own religion. There is not proof that God does not exist, or that a spiritual reality does not exist, just as there might not be much evidence that it does. I, myself, am open to finding out the truth, whatever it might be. I am not interested in closing myself off from any knowledge or wisdom, and am interested in learning from any and every source I can. I am not saying either, that if God exists, it has to be a God from a specific religion, or a guy in the sky who is constantly watching and judging us. God could not even be a guy, it could be a genderless and completely formless energy, or it could be the Tao, so to speak, the eternal way, the delicate, constantly changing balance of everything that is. God could be the universe itself. The fact is we don’t know. All we know is that we’re here in this life, and that it’s very weird. There are amazing things in it, and unfortunately there are unimaginable horrors as well. Why is this? Why does it have to be this way? Is it fair? Is it right? Was it designed? Was it random? Is it even good? Is it some form of hell? Some kind of heaven of our own making? Is there some underlying meaning or lesson to it all? Or does it all mean nothing? Is all the love nothing but an illusion? Is all the suffering just a sick cosmic joke? Who knows, but that’s exactly my point. This whole situation of the unknown, of what is or could be, deserves to be approached with respect and with wonder, because it is the source of all that we are and can ever aspire to be. I might continue this train of thought tomorrow…
