500 WORDS, DAY 150: Fear

Fear takes on many forms, some not very obvious. We have all been brought up to believe the classic notion that life is unfair and that the planet which we live in is a dangerous place. Often times as we are growing into adulthood, we are discouraged by our families from travelling and seeing the world, which is actually one of the most rewarding experiences one can have, especially at a young age. This discouragement we received from our parents, even though preventing a great experience from taking place, obviously does not come from a desire to deprive us of something, but is really a result of the worry our families feel when they know we are planning to venture out into this big, crazy, interconnected world we have been born into. Most parents would probably prefer that their child miss out on seeing the world rather than having them set out to travel and risking any kind of accident or even death. However, a reasonable person is capable of travelling and seeing the world, and interacting with people from all cultures and backgrounds if he chooses to, so there should be no reason for a parent to worry about their child travelling as long as the child shows signs that he is growing into a reasonable and mature adult. If the fear of accident or death is caused by the thought that someone else, be it a thief or a gang member or any kind of criminal, might harm their child, then, yes, that is a sad reality of the world we live in, but the existence of evil shouldn’t prevent us from exploring this life. A lot of people have unfortunately lost all ability to see the general goodness of the world, and they are always anxious and expecting the worst. Their thoughts are always drifting from one worry to the next, tense and paranoid, never socializing or bringing to light an unpopular opinion due to fear of confrontation. Such a person sees a hostile environment all around them; an environment which wants to ridicule them, and rob them of their dreams and ambitions. Such a person fears the negative nature of the mind of others, since they have realized the immense potential for evil that dwells in their own mind. Too many people these days are living based on fear. We are afraid to take chances, scared to fail, and for this reason, life ends us passing us by. Our fear can end up doing damage not only to us, but to all those around us we unconsciously try to limit to our expectations. If things are always kept within our expectations, then nothing can ever get too overwhelming for us. A lot of us live in constant fear of rejection, trying to fit in with everyone we see, simply because we are afraid that who we truly are will be rejected. If you feel this way, then let me ask you something. Do you believe you are worthy of life? Do you believe that you are worthy of enjoying the beauty that life has to offer, the beauty of a happy, caring family or people you care for, the simple beauty of watching the sun rising in the morning? If you did not feel worthy of these things, you would have no reason to get out of bed in the morning, ever. But yet you continue to wake up, to shower and get dressed, to eat, to seek romance and love, to dream and to plan out projects which you are passionate about. Why do we continue to do these things, if deep inside we feel worthless, like life is too dangerous to truly live? We have to make sure it’s because we want to live, not because we are afraid of death or whatever may follow it.
