500 WORDS, DAY 80: The Light of Truth

Amidst all the chaos and confusion this crazy world of ours seems to be drowning in, a faint yet inspiring light leads the way forward for those who decide to embark on the solitary path of awakening. When I say awakening, I am not referring to any kind of spontaneous revelation, or to any dogmatic belief imposed by any religion or organized group. What I am referring to is simply our own abilities, as individuals, to decide to be better, and to continuously awaken from the illusions we are in, even if they serve to keep us comfortable. It’s a decision we have to make each and every day, as we face every kind of adversity imaginable, and as we navigate our way through a world in which many people might be offended by us making that decision. Some people continuously choose to look away from the things within themselves that they are afraid of, or that they are uncomfortable with, in order to preserve their current level of comfort. What they don’t know is that they are blinding themselves, as well as falling deeper into the darkness of ignorance. That is why I referred to the path of awakening as a solitary one. When you choose to break old habits, you start to realize that not everyone might be as supportive of you as you might think. People have put you into a box, and you breaking out of that box in their head means that they now have to question their own lives. Throughout history, people who brought a message of change have been ridiculed as well as much worse, even if now we have come to view their messages as universally understood and respected. A lot of people are “friends” with each other, yet they never call out each other’s self-destructive behavior, because that would simply interfere with the good times. In the same way, some people might get offended if you offer advice on their behavior, even if you and anyone else can clearly see that there is no evil intention in your advice, but quite the contrary. So, the light I had previously mentioned is truth. Truth might hurt to some, because it means change, it means pain and struggle, and everything else they so desperately wish to avoid. Truth could make you a martyr or an outcast, and in the end, no one really knows what the actual truth is. So, then, how can you even follow the path of truth? Again, this is why it is such a solitary pursuit. The only truth you can really follow is your own. You have to be true to yourself and to what you think about your life and the world you live in, and you have to continuously challenge yourself to become better. If that means not being the most popular, not having many friends, or even being ridiculed and persecuted, then so be it. Well, it’s much easier said than done, and even I don’t know if I’m truly a follower of this light, even though I am aware of it and writing about it. I guess only time will tell though.

If you have a few minutes check out my song ‘love & light.’ I appreciate you.
